Britain's nuclear comeback is no longer a policy aspiration. It is a funded, sited, engineering programme — and the investment implications are arriving faster than most energy professionals anticipated.

Where the Visible Programme Stands: H2 2026

  • Technology: Rolls-Royce SMR selected by Great British Nuclear following a two-year competitive process.

  • First Site: Wylfa, Anglesey is confirmed; additional site announcements are expected through 2026–27.

  • Capital & Engineering: Government funding commitment stands at £2.5bn+, with the Owner's Engineer contract (won by Arup) valued at up to £600m.

  • Timeline & Scale: First power is targeted for the mid-2030s. Each factory-built 470 MW unit is designed to compress delivery risk and power ~1 million homes for 60+ years.

The UK New Entrants: Why Greenfield Developers Matter

The most underappreciated dynamic in the UK SMR story is the emergence of privately backed, pure-play developers. They carry none of the legacy baggage of the established utilities and are aggressively searching for sites and local partners

The KHNP Opportunity: Proven Execution

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's iSMR (170 MW) deserves specific investor attention. KHNP brings something almost no other global developer can claim: a track record of delivering on time and on budget.

KHNP built the 5.6 GW Barakah plant in the UAE—an execution achievement almost without precedent in Western nuclear history. The iSMR’s smaller footprint makes it ideal for industrial co-location and phased development. Whether the UK regulator's Generic Design Assessment ultimately approves the iSMR is still to be determined, but investors with a 2030s horizon must track this technology now.

Three Investment Themes for 2026

  • Site control is the new grid connection — Securing options on suitable brownfield sites before programme acceleration is the near-term priority.

  • Industrial offtake structures — SMR economics improve dramatically with long-duration offtake from co-located datacentres, green hydrogen, and SAF producers.

  • Supply chain investment — The push for domestic manufacturing creates a lucrative second investment layer beyond the projects themselves.
